ADVICE TIME
Pick a Shooter
We have the pleasure of receiving some very valuable advice from a professional photographer, Lauren May, about what to consider when choosing this very important factor:
“I’ve been a wedding photographer for over 14 years, mainly photographing weddings across the Lake District and even a few times abroad in Italy and Spain. Here are a few of my top tips for couples looking to book their wedding photographer…
Book in a enquiry chat/video call before booking
I always recommend that couples should book in a quick call/video chat with potential wedding photographers. While it’s convenient to communicate over emails, you really can’t get a feel for somebody!
Your wedding photographer is one of the few suppliers who will be with you all day, so it’s crucial that you can get on with them and your personalities gel together.
A video call is a great way to get a feel for the photographer, as well as an opportunity to ask any questions you may have for them. Plus, it’s always a good idea to meet someone (even if virtually!) who will be such a big part of your wedding.
Ask to see more wedding photos
Photographers are generally very happy to show you full galleries and slideshows if required. Looking on Instagram can be a good starting point, but photographers rarely share allllll the shots from every wedding.
You might want to see examples of group photos, or photos of the wedding decor which don’t always make it to the ‘gram.
I’m more than happy to share some extra wedding photography galleries with couples who want to see more or how their photos could look in their gallery, just ask!
Make sure your styles align
There is a photographer out there for everyone, and it’s so important that you pick a photographer who has a style that aligns with the type of photos you like.
I’m a very colourful photographer who loves vibrancy, so my photos are true to life but just a little bit more colourful. Sometimes I have enquiries asking if I can edit differently or like another photographer, and the answer will always be no (but for a good reason!)
We have all spent years perfecting our edits, and we all edit our photos completely differently. When you pick a photographer, what you see is what you will get. It’s like asking a chef if they can cook a totally different recipe… just pick the other chef with the recipe that you love in the first place!
Make sure you pick a photographer whose editing style you really love, or else you may be disappointed when you receive your final photos.
Thanks to Lauren as we think this is a great start! This should help tick off that box! Still pondering?! Then just drop us a line.
Happy planning!
